Panel 15 - The false witnesses disrobing (left panel of pair)

Description:
The 'false witnesses' who had spoken against Stephen at his trial, remove their cloaks and hand them to a man sitting far left as described in Acts 7:58; "and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul". This is of course Saul of Tarsus, who goes on to become St Paul. Note chap on right, struggling to remove his purple cloak.

Note:
The detail of Saul acting as cloakroom attendant at the stoning of Stephen subsequently became quite common in 13th century French depictions - e.g. in tympana on the west facades at Bourges (c.1240), at Rouen (c.1240) and at Sens (c. 1270).
