Description:
Although omitted from the Golden Legend version, Sophronius' Life of
St Mary the Egyptian tells how, after leaving Jerusalem on her way
to the Jordan, Mary prays in the Church of St John the Baptist. Here the
iconographer has expanded this event to show Mary being blessed by a cleric.
