Panel 04 -
Signature panel (cobbler scraping a hide with a lunellum)
After the initial treatment seen in panel 02, the cobbler is here scraping the fat layer away from a hide stretched over a bar. He is shown pushing a long-handled 'lunellum' (note the wooden T-bar handle in his right hand) - a knife specially designed for use in preparing hides. The blade curves up at each end, like a crescent moon, to avoid puncturing the skin. Shorter handled versions of such knives sometimes appear in manuscript illuminations showing the preparation of parchment. |
