St Nicholas was reputed to have been an unusually precocious young student. One of several images of education to appear in the windows and portal sculpture at Chartres. These are usually seen as a nostalgic throwback to the glory days of the School of Chartres under Fulbert, even though by the time these windows were made, that institution was already on the wane, eclipsed by the growth of Paris University.
