There are various events mentioned in Lubin's Vita that could explain this scene but I follow Yves Delaporte in seeing this as as the meeting between Lubin and the elderly deacon Nileffus, who encourages him to travel to many other monasteries and thereby broaden his education. This would at least explain the events depicted in the two following panels, 12 and 13.
