Melchizedek was the Priest-King of El-Elyom who appears in Genesis 14:18-20, where he blesses Abraham and gives him bread and wine. He therefore serves as a common antetype or prefiguration of the Eucharist - an association made explicit here by the "IHC" monogram faintly visible on the lid of his covered chalice.
