The image of a man tumbling from his horse normally serves in medieval art as a symbol of 'pride'. In that context it regularly appears in portal sculpture cycles of virtues and vices (there is one on the south transept portal at Chartres, for example). Here however the same visual topos has been employed to represent Pharaoh, receiving his punishment for hubris and for attempting to keep the Israelites in bondage.
