Amongst Becket's most implaccable enemies were the Archbishops of York,
London and Salisbury. On July 14th 1170, The King's son was crowned by
the Archbishop York - a task which legally was the sole prerogative of
Canterbury and hence taken as a deliberate provocation.
The artist has not distinguished between the various archbishops in this story though the assistant here carries a crozier, rather than the pastoral cross normally associated with Becket.
