According to the Golden Legend version, Pope Sixtus left the treasures of the Church in Laurence's care before going to his martyrdom. Decius then had Laurence arrested in the hope of getting his hands on the loot. The heavily armed men in the flanking panels may be a reference to the violent manner in which Decius seized power from his predecessor, Emperor Phillip.
