Although St Peter (processional cross, pointed papal tiara, pallium) is sometimes described as ordaining Martial, the latter is shown here already in a bishop's mitre. The scene corresponds to the hagiographic topos of the pope given a saint-to-be his mission to go and evangelise a particular place.
