ESTONIA ::: TALLINN

View from Toompea
Toompea hill is the seat of Estonia's parliament and the location of the Toomkirik and Nevsky Cathedral. A fortress was built here in 1229 but the town below was also heavily fortified. 19 of the original 66 defence towers survive, the ones shown here are on the best preserved section of the wall, running from Lai to Kloostri. This view is from the lookout point at the top of the (exhausting) steps which lead up from Nunne. The large church with the copper spire is St Olaf's (Oleviste kirik) - it's 124m spire was supposed to attract ships to Tallinn's rich port. The church is the subject of numerous legends and superstitions - as is the former KGB headquarters which stands alongside it.
