Viru Gate
Viru is the eastern entrance to the lower town. The banner between the gate towers was celebrating the 750th anniversary of Tallinn's adoption of Lubeck law, the legal code of the Hanseatic trading ports. The white monstrosity in the background is the Soviet era Viru Hotels. It's 430 rooms are especially popular with Finns who flock to Tallinn at weekends for the cheap beer. The only thing one can say in the Viru's favour is that it has the only panoramic view which does not include the Viru Hotel...
