The cathedral was built between 1345 and 1508 and is a splendid example of the late gothic style. Among the tombs inside is that of the Hungarian hero Ferenc Rakoczi who led the abortive uprising against the Habsburgs which ended in 1711. It is a measure of how sensitive relations were during the days of the Austro-Hungarian empire that Rakoczi was only officially pardoned and reburied here almost 200 year later in 1905.
