Suomenlinna - Notes

Suomenlinna is a series of small islands a few miles from Helsinki which once constituted a formidable naval fortress. As well as the fort itself, the islands house a number of workshops & barracks, together with the Naval Institute and the largest still-functioning 17th century dry-dock in the world. Quite apart from its considerable value as a historical site, Suomenlinna (Svaeborg to the Swedes) is a very popular day-trip destination for the residents of Helsinki who use even the slightest rise in temperature as an excuse to sunbathe and swim in the many delightful little bays.
