The Dada Hari well is carved from soft sandstone and parts of it are quite worn but some beautiful details remain in the sheltered spots. The motif seen here - a lamp hanging from a rosette, seems to be quite a popular indo-saracenic theme. I saw similar examples in a number of other sites from that period. Photographing the baolis is hard work, partly because of the low light levels/high contrast and partly because they are guarded by the Archaeological Survey of India. Like most branches of the Indian civil service, these guys are far more interested in making a fast buck than they are in doing their job. Everywhere I went I was told I couldn't use a tripod unless I got a permit (which would have meant going back to Delhi and paying a hefty bribe) but they all made it clear that for a little 'baksheesh', they would happily look the other way.
