This baoli in the small hamlet of Adilaj, some 17km north of Ahmedabad was built in 1502 and is one of the best in the country. The extensive decorations include elements of buddhist designs as well as the indo-saracenic. The well itself is at the bottom of four flights of stairs with balconies between each where the traveller can sit and rest amongst beautiful ornate carvings. In places you can still see the remains of a ramp where bullocks would have been used to carry water to the surface. Sadly the guard who was at Adilaj when I got there was a more senior member of the service and had had his ideas of current rates in the baksheesh market over-inflated by some recent Japanese visitors. As a result, he wanted $20 to let me take photographs using a tripod. Eventually got him down to a more realistic 100 rupees but he then made such a nuisance of himself that after just taking 3 views I gave up.
