The Satyagraha Ashram was established here by Ghandi in 1917 as a place where he could live with a small community according to his beliefs in peaceful coexistence in a shared communal life of work and meditation. Here, he and his followers prepared themselves for the mental and physical suffering that their acts of passive resistance to British rule would involve. The site, which now houses an excellent display of images and text explaining the Satyagraha movement, remains a blissfully tranquil retreat from the chaos of modern Ahmedabad.
