Built in 1570, the Mosque of Sidi Sayid is unfortunately located in the middle of a busy traffic intersection and thus usually wreathed in a cloud of black diesel fumes. This pollution is a serious threat to the beautiful window screens which are carved from sandstone with an amazing level of detail. When you stand inside the mosque and see the light filtering through the branches of the tree in the widow shown on the right of this picture, it is hard to believe that all this fine tracery could have been cut from stone.
