Sarkhej is a village about 10 km southwest of Ahmedabad famous for its Rauza - a complex of mosques, shrines and palaces built in the middle of the 15th century around the edges of a large rectangular tank. They are all splendid examples of the so-called Indo-Saracenic style of architecture characteristic of Gujerat. ie they were islamic buildings but built with elements of hindu architectural styling. This picture shows the courtyard of the great mosque. The colonaded prayer hall to the left houses the tomb of Ahmed Khalfa, an important local Muslim saint.
