The small white fort on the left of the picture is the Fortino do Mar, aka the 'sea fort' or Panikot Fortress. Although it's pretty tiny, the fort (built in 1535) was easily defended and dominated the important shipping routes for hundreds of years. It houses a lighthouse and a chapel and there was talk of opening a smart tourist restaurant there, though in January '99 when I took these pictures, it was not accessible.
