Just visible on this not very good scan are the clock tower (slightly right of centre) and the famously excessive Umaid Bhavan Hotel at the top-right. Note the preponderance of blue-walled buildings in the foreground. Most people you meet in Jodhpur will tell you that the blue-painted houses denote the residences of upper caste brahmins - a popular myth but sadly untrue. In fact the blue comes from copper sulphate which was added to the white-wash to deter termites. The blue houses mainly congregate around the base of the castle simply because that was were the termite problem was at its worst (and coincidentally where most of the brahmin families lived)..
