JORDAN ::: 'DESERT CASTLES LOOP'

Qusayr Amra
View of the painting in the east vault (left-most in the previous slide). The panels show scenes of builders - upper row, second panel from the right shows two men using a saw-pit to cut wooden beams. Whilst this is pure speculation, it's possible that this choice of subject may have reflected Al Walid's desire to be recognised as the builder of the Great Mosque in Damascus. At the top of the picture you can just see part of the soffit of one of the transverse arches, painted with a semi-naked dancing girl.
