Madaba is a small, predominantly christian town, 30km south of Amman. An ancient settlement, which features in the Old Testament as the Moabite town of Medaba,
modern-day Madaba is most famous for its Byzantine mosaics, particularly this extraordinary map of Palestine. The mosaic map was laid out about
560AD. Originally, it measured 25m x 5m, used over two million pieces and would have taken an estimated 11,000 man-years to complete. Clearly visible
are a large number of pilgrimage sites and biblical towns - in this frame you can see the oval shape of Jerusalem centre left with the Dead Sea at the top.
(Apologies for the large image file but I wanted to include as much detail as possible for these photos of the map.) |
