The hills and cliffs around Maalulla are riddled with natural and man-made caves, some of which date back to the earliest days of Christianity. Some were used by hermits while others had a far more mundane purpose. These caves, just below the Convent or St Sergius (visible top left) are now used as stables for the Convent's mules.
