SYRIA ::: MAALULLA

Maalulla
These rock-cut graves are on a ledge in the narrow gorge that winds up the hill behind the Convent of St Tekla. Probably Christian graves from the 1st century AD. The man-made caves on the other side of the gorge, behind the telegraph wires, also appear to be burial niches.
Taken September 2001, on the Wista VX 5"x4" with a 65mm Fujinon lens and using both tilt and swing to keep the foreground in focus.
The following slide, taken on my first visit (Easter 1999) shows the view down onto this ledge from the top of the cliff opposite.
