Temple of Baal Shamin - 1 of 3
Taken at 05:30, about 15 minutes after sunrise. Baal Shamin was the god of storms and of fertility. The present sanctuary structure (on the right) dates to about 130 AD and is superbly preserved having served as a church during the Byzantine era. The colonade on the left of the picture mark the edge of the southern temenos (temple courtyard) built shortly after the sanctuary.
Visible on top of the hill in the background is Qalaat ibn Ma'an - a 13th century Mameluk castle.
