SYRIA ::: BOSRA

The  Cardo  Maximus  -  3  of  3
View south along the decumanus with the mosque of Omar (also spelt Umar) at the end. This mosque dates from the 8th century and although it was partly reconstructed in the 12th century, it is one of only a handful of early mosques which has retained its original form.
Note the profusion of black basalt - the strength of this building material is one of the main factors explaining the unusually good state of preservation of Roman Bosra.
