SYRIA ::: BOSRA |
||
|
View of the baths facing north across the cardo maximus. Ornamentation at Bosra tends to be quite restrained because of the practical difficulty of carving the hard basalt - the spiral volutes on these capitals are nowhere near as deeply cut as they normally would be. The large square arch visible in this picture (on the other side of the cardo) is all that is left of a 'kalybe' - a pagan open-air shrine where statues of gods would have been placed on public display. |
