As with many of the buildings in Palmyra, the walls of the sanctuary appear pock-marked, as if by shrapnel damage. In fact these marks are where heavy bronze staples would have been used to strengthen the walls and protect against earthquake damage. Sadly all but a few were removed by the Ottoman forces for making canon balls.
