As well as depositing their dead in towers, some of the palmyrenes buried them in elaborate underground mausolea (known as hypogea). This picture shows a carved stone sarcophagus in front of the hypogeum from which it was probably dragged by grave-robbers. The front of the sarcophagus is carved with a group of four male portraits, now much eroded.
