Al Ja'abariyyeh is one of a trio of norias alongside the An-Nuri mosque. The pleasant little restaurant (with an hysterically kitsch indoor fountain and shell-covered grotto) behind the mosque has a small balcony from where I was able to get this close-up of the noria's axle. Al Ja'abariyyeh was in the midst of repairs at the time (the axles are poplar trunks and need replacing every 15 years or so) allowing a good view of how complex the construction of these amazing wheels is. Lubrication for the axle comes from the water which misses the trough at the top and comes splashing over the sides.
