View from the first floor roof, looking up at the domed ceiling. Note how the flat bricks are all angled in to form a shallow dome. With the typical Byzantine love of bureaucracy and order, the bricks used throughout the empire were all of standard dimensions -as they are here. Although the materials are all local, it is likely that the architects were from Constantinople and they would probably have brought the brick moulds with them. |
