Taleju Temples
These pagoda roofs belong to a small Taleju Temple in the corner of Sundari Chowk (foreground) and the magnificent octagonal Taleju Bhawani Temple in the corner of the main palace courtyard, the Mul Chowk. After an earlier structure burnt down in 1662, this part of the palace was completed in 1666 - the same year as the Great Fire of London. Taleju, an aspect of Mahadevi, was the family deity of the Malla Kings and also had temples dedicated to her in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur's royal palaces. Both of the temples have gilded finials in the shape of Indian-style Shikhara temples - the Himalayas in the background provide a reminder that this shape was supposedly an echo of Shiva's home, Mount Kailash.
