From each side of the square spire the eyes of Buddha keep watch. The white squiggle between the eyes is not supposed to be his nose - it's the number 1 in Nepali script, symbolising the unity of all things. The man sweeping the steps at the bottom right of this picture gives a sense of just how large the stupa is.
