Note the small 'third eye' between the two eye-brows and the symbol of unity (the Nepali character for 'ek' - the number 1) below them. The shield above the eyes shows Amitabha Buddha at the top together with four Boddhisattvas. These are the 'saints' of the Buddhist religion - spiritually enlightened beings who have given up the chance for Nirvana in order to stay behind and help mankind. The best known of the Boddhisatvas is the most recent one - normally known as Avalokiteshvara - in Nepal he is combined with certain aspects of the Hindu deities and worshiped as Manjushri, who amongst other things cut the Chobar Gorge with his sword to make the Kathmandu lake into the Kathmandu Valley.
