Having drawn it up to the right size and folded over the rim, the potter now presses from inside the jug to bow the sides out and give it its familiar shape. The entire operation from throwing an unshaped block of clay onto the wheel to cutting the finished item free with a piece of string and placing it aside to dry took less than two minutes.
