The Kasthamandap or 'House of Wood' from which kathmandu takes its name probably dates back to the 12th century. Legends tell it was originally made from the wood of a single Sal tree and may originally have served as a kind of caravanserai and meeting place. At some point it was converted to a temple dedicated to Gorakhnath (a local 11th century guru considered by some to be an incarnation of Shiva). The small two-roof pagoda behind it to the right is a Shiva temple where barbers wait for clients. Early in the mornings this is my favourite spot for drinking the day's first cup of chai as there is always something happening and on cold mornings there is usually an impromptu bonfire to huddle round.
