From the inside it's a typically dull and dusty museum on the rare occasions when it's open but from the outside a marvellously over-the-top piece of colonial architecture in surprisingly good condition. The design is totally unsuited to the hot, humid and airless conditions in Crater which really demand long deep verandahs and shady courtyards but its quirky facade lends a touch of surrealism to the otherwise drab and sun-baked surroundings.
