YEMEN ::: SANA'A

ash Shuhada Mosque
Sana'a was often known as the 'City of 64 Minarets' and although many of the older buildings no longer exist, there was a wave of new mosque building in the 1980's. Whilst one or two are eye-sores, the vast ash-Shuhada Mosque, near the taxi stations to the south of Bab al Yaman, is a masterpiece, splendidly combining traditional and modern aspects of islamic architecture. In this shot, taken at sunset, one can also see the cliffs of the 3000m high Jabal Nuqum. Unfortunately, as is so often the case in the Yemen, the fort on the hill is classed as a military area and is thus off-limits to civilians.
