YEMEN ::: SANA'A

Traditional tower house
This building on Ali Abdul Mogni Street stands in the grounds of the National Museum (although heavily looted during the civil war this museum has an excellent collection, put together and preserved with assistance from the German government). Never did manage to find out what's inside and needless to say, this being the more commercial part of town, there wasn't a single angle where one's view of the tower doesn't include telegraph wires. Even so, it's another good illustration of the traditional Yemeni approach to house building; make it tall and narrow, don't put any windows in the ground floor, make the walls really thick at the bottom and you'll have a house which is comfortable, well suited to the climate and above all, very easy to defend from attackers.
